Pub to face licence review
Monday 17th May 2010, 10:30AM BST.
One of Oswestry’s most popular pubs could have to close because of police fears over a rise in crime and disorder. Police have asked for a licence review.
The Kings Head in the town centre has become one of the most popular late night venues in Oswestry.
But police say that there has been a serious increase in crime, disorder and anti-social behaviour connected with the pub and have asked for a review of the premises licence.
A meeting of Shropshire Council’s north licensing sub-committee will be held on Thursday to review it.
The Church Street pub currently licensed until 11pm Monday to Wednesday, 1am Thursdays and Sundays, 3am Fridays and 4am Saturdays.
A report to the meeting from West Mercia Police said there had been 20 incidents connected with the pub since October.
Fiona Gee, a council spokeswoman, said the licensing authority, after considering the relevant issues, could decide to take no further action, issue warning notices, modify the conditions of the Kings Head licence, suspend it for up to three months or even revoke the licence.
The licensing meeting will be held at the town’s Council Chamber in Castle View at 9.30am.
Fiona Gee said: “During the period for representations, four letters of support were received from three local businesses and a local resident.”
She said that in determining the application the licensing authority must give weight to the steps that were necessary to promote the licensing objectives, the representations presented by all parties and guidance from the Licensing Act and Shropshire Council’s Licensing Policy.
The licence for the Kings Head was first granted in 2005 .
