Probe begins to save historic town walls

Investigation work has got under way today to help prevent the collapse of Ludlow’s crumbling historic town walls. The probe is expected to take experts two weeks to complete.
It comes as part of a wider scheme to strengthen and refurbish part of the ancient Ludlow town wall which supports the north-western part of the Castle Square car park.
Martin Taylor-Smith, Shropshire Council’s cabinet member for strategic planning and transport, said: “This is important work, not only for safety reasons, but also to preserve the wall for future generations.”
The scheme to strengthen and refurbish the wall, which is also a scheduled ancient monument, has been in place since February when part of the car park was fenced off to reduce the risk of traffic affecting the stability of the wall which, in places is leaning.
Part of the project will also include carrying out repairs to the car park’s drainage system.
A recent specialist CCTV survey of the pipes showed there is a broken pipe near the system’s outlet.
If it is not repaired, experts fear it could cause further damage to the wall. It is estimated this repair work will be carried out in early June and will last for about a week.
It is hoped with both the ground investigation work and drainage repairs under way, much of the car park will remain open for business as usual and disruption will be kept to a minimum.
