Worker loses £2,500 after revealing Pin
Saturday 15th May 2010, 11:30AM BST.
A Shropshire woman was conned out of £2,500 after revealing her bank card Pin number to a caller over the phone.
Police today renewed warnings for people never to give personal or bank details to cold callers.
The incident happened in Oswestry.
After the woman revealed her Pin details, she realised her purse, containing her bank card, had been stolen.
The victim, who has not been named, received a phone call at work at about 11.15am on Wednesday from a man claiming to be from her bank.
He said they suspected her cards were being fraudulently used and asked her to confirm her Pin number for security reasons.
A short time later, the victim found her purse had been stolen from an office at the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital.
Between the theft coming to light and the cards being cancelled, £2,500 was withdrawn from her bank account, police said.
“Although not common in Shropshire, there have been similar scams across the country where an offender steals someone’s purse or wallet from their workplace and then calls them at work to ask for their Pin or other details,” police spokeswoman Maria Hawkaluk said.
“Never give out any such details to a cold caller, whoever they might claim to be. A Pin should not be given to anybody and no bank will ever ask for it,” she said.
Anyone who might have seen people acting suspiciously in the hospital that morning is asked to contact police on 0300 333 3000.
The purse was made of black leather and had a gold-coloured clasp.
