Town supermarket plan scaled back
Friday 14th May 2010, 10:45AM BST.
Major plans for a supermarket in Oswestry are being scaled back by nearly a half to woo planners to back the bid for a store, it emerged today.
The two Oswestry businessmen behind the JT Hughes and Guttercrest companies’ application for a supermarket on their land off Salop Road and Victoria Road, say they do not want to see super-sized stores harm local shops and businesses.
The new planning application sees the proposed store downsized from 4,385 square metres to just 2,500 square metres.
John Hughes and Garry Power, who run the two companies, say they have listened to the views of people and politicians over a new store for the town.
The two bosses have pledged to relocate their businesses in Oswestry once the application is granted.
Shropshire Council deferred decisions on four planning applications for superstores in the town — on the Central car park, the livestock market, the Richard Burbidge factory and the JT Hughes and Guttercrest sites
Mr John Hughes, managing director of JT Hughes, said he wanted to safeguard the town centre following fears that a superstore could draw people away from town centre shops. He added: “I am an Oswestry man, born and bred, and would not do anything to harm Oswestry or fellow retailers.”
