‘Lessons learned’ after girl’s death
Friday 14th May 2010, 2:40PM BST.
Doctors at Shropshire’s two main hospitals are to introduce changes in the way children are monitored after surgery following the death of a county teenager.
Danielle Harris, of Broseley, near Bridgnorth, died in Telford’s Princess Royal Hospital from an undetected blood clot which caused deep vein thrombosis (DVT) after an appendix operation last year.
Now Dr Frank Hinde, a paediatric specialist, said Danielle’s death had prompted doctors to consider introducing a check list to try to ensure blood clots from DVT in youngsters did not go undiagnosed again.
He said it would be based on a points system where different circumstances and factors would be graded to decide how likely the patient was to develop a clot.
Dr Hinde said he had heard of very few children developing blood clots in 34 years of medicine. He added: “I don’t know how many cases there have been like this nationally, but we need to get this system agreed on a nationwide basis.”
Danielle, a pupil at Thomas Telford School, died after collapsing when she had returned to the hospital for surgery to have an abscess drained following the initial operation.
It is believed she developed the blood clot after an operation to remove her appendix on May 10, 2009.
Despite efforts of a resuscitation team she died after going into cardiac arrest on May 29 last year.
Speaking after coroner John Ellery recorded a verdict that Danielle died from complications following the surgery, her father Wesley Harris paid tribute to staff who cared for Danielle.
He said: “I want to thank everyone who has been involved because it has been a very difficult case.”
