Dorrington Players offer top night out

Thursday 13th May 2010, 7:10AM BST.

An outraged bishop, a sympathetic housekeeper and a domineering older sister are just some of the colourful characters coming to a south Shropshire stage next week.

Church Stretton’s amateur theatre group, the Dorrington Players are performing I’ll Get My Man, a farce by Philip King, from May 20 to 22 at the Silvester Horne Institute.

Arthur Humphrey, a hapless unworldly vicar, lives a life of quiet desperation with his sister Harriette, plagued by his nosy neighbour Mrs Barrington-Locke and comforted only by his housekeeper Mrs Carter.

Oblivious of these tensions, Humphrey’s nephew tired of the unwelcome attention of adoring females seeks refuge at the peaceful country rectory.

When Harriette dismisses Mrs Carter, Humphrey takes hurried steps to change his unhappy situation. His advert in The Times brings two unexpected visitors, Pixie and Josephine and mounting chaos. With the arrival of the bishop, the cast is complete.

First performed by the Dorrington Players in 1973 the play is directed, as then, by Jim Rossell. A donation from the proceeds will be made to charity.

Performances begin at 7.30pm.

Tickets are £6 or £5 in advance from Burway Books or John R Thomas (florist).
