Deer cull underway after near misses

Deer are causing havoc in a Shropshire village with drivers reporting a number of near misses as the animal dash out in front of their cars.

Estate owners are now culling some of the herd following calls for action from people in the parish of Leighton and Eaton Constantine, near Shrewsbury.

Residents said they feared somebody could be seriously hurt if they hit a deer .

Roger Pittaway, clerk of Leighton and Eaton Constantine Parish Council, said following a parish council meeting this week estate owners had agreed to work together to tackle the problem.

“The owner of Leighton Hall has culled a number of deer on the estate already,” he said. “We agreed to address the problem and we need to co-ordinate things from all the major estates in the area.

“Overall a cull should reduce the numbers to a more manageable amount which would be excellent.”

He added as recently as this week there had been reports of a number of near misses.

Malcolm Corrie, the owner of Leighton Estate, said: “There is a national problem and each individual farm and estate is trying to do their own culling.

“One of the biggest problems is The Wrekin was opened up so much more to the public that stalkers can’t go up there any more as they daren’t fire a shot with people walking up there.

“We’ve culled 18 deer since Christmas but every estate has to do their own culling when the herd goes onto their land.”

Last week it was reported the deer herd was an issue in the whole parish, although the village of Garmston has been particularly affected.

Mr Pittaway said it was believed a herd of wild deer had come to the area from Wenlock Edge.

I’ve had a number of near misses with children running out in front of my car. Should we have a cull of those too?
