County could soon recycle half of its waste

Shropshire householders have been praised for their recycling efforts which could see the county’s recycling rate reach 50 per cent by 2012.

Mike Owen, who was recently appointed to the Shropshire Council cabinet as member for waste and economy, said the recycling rate was rising and well above the national average.

His comments were made as he visited the household recycling centre at the Battlefield Enterprise Park in Shrewsbury, to find out more about the facility and improvements to waste and recycling services across the county.

Councillor Owen said: “The council and our contractors Veolia are working hard to improve services and to make it easier for people to recycle more. In the last year we have seen a new recycling centre open in Oswestry, with a new one planned for Bridgnorth.

“Kerbside collections of plastic bottles are now being carried out in the Oswestry area and in north Shropshire, and will be introduced across the rest of the county over the next 12 months.

“These developments will help ensure that more than 50 per cent of our household waste will be recycled or composted by 2012, which will be a fantastic achievement.”

Cue people moaning about the waste to energy plant.

We still need to sort out where our actual waste is going. Its not fair to expect other counties to continue taking it.

Elephant, please don’t forget that most people call ‘waste to energy plants’ incinerators.

What do you think about food waste collection and anaerobic digestion?

i’d like to see a new collection bin for recycling garden soil.
theres always farmers, gardeners wanting topsoil,so i’m sure the council could make a profit selling it.
homeowners like myself with no transport & living on a tight budget would love to have it collected for free & see the council with a bit extra cash towards their budget.

what this clearly shows is that there is real scope for people to recycle most of their waste and that as such an incinerator in Shrewsbury to burn all the waste collected from ludlow, oswestry, telford etc is not neccessary, the planners must see this, planning is based on need, there is no need for this burner because people are recycling more and there is not enough waste left over to burn, so lets stop this burner and recycle more instead

i think we still have a long way to go to catch up with germany and the nederland, my pen pal live in germany and has their rubbish bin collected monthly!! they also collect all plastics and plasticised drinks cartons for recycling though so its a miles better service that the rubbish one offered by shropshire council, its only going down hill because they used to collect batteries and shoes when it was Shrewsbury council and now they dont bother so they have to go in the rubbish bin instead, this is a backwards step and to me it shows they are cutting front line services already whilst they still pay their executives big money and charge high tax

its a bit rich of no 1, because we live in a democracy and yes we value our clean air and childrens health, so we dont want incineration here, the experts said smoking and nuclear power and thelidmahide were all safe and they were wrong people are normally right to not want pollution

part of the reason the council can boast such high figures is because they do not include construction waste and business waste, all councils do this to manipulate their statistics but it belies the real scale of the waste mountain in this country, you can see yoursefl if you go to a cafe or pub, no one recycles there even though businesses are produced ten times more waste that us households we have all this investment and red tape for household waste yet we ignore the majority of it, utter utter madness

“energy from waste” is just PR speak for incineration, a wasteful, polluting, outdated and expensive way of treating waste, the council should be investing more in anaerobic digestion, collection of food waste and waste minimisation which could save the tax payer millions of pounds and achieve higher recycling rates and avoid the need for another debt ridden expensive PFI project

i just cant believe how igorant the council has been of public opinion on this incinerator. From the outset there has been a huge ground swell of public opinion against it, on safety cost and environmental ground, my personal bug bear is the aesthetics of a modern desgin on the edge of shrewsbury visible from the ancient battefield it will scar the landscape and be the first thing rail visitors see as they arrive into town from the north, it will put off the tourists big time as well as destroying valuable precious resources like cans, plastic etc which are worth thousands of pounds per tonne as opposed to a few pence as electicity

to be fair to my bin men they always turn up on time and do the business, it cant be a nice job in the winter especially yet they’re always smiling, i agree the executives are over paid but they should lay off the bin men with the critisim of the system and the choice of disposal options because they are just the worker they do the real graft

it is only right people complain about the incinerator and the muppets who signed up to a 27 year PFI contract, you mark my words the public is being fleeced by these big long term pfi contracts, alot of this will come out in the independant audit of the national accounts being done, there is billions of debt in there and its like buying things on a credit card, the whole idea of renting an incinerator off a private company at credit card interest rates, paying them to operate it, paying them to build it, paying them a fee for the waste disposal and then paying them to collect the stuff for the lifetime of that plant is madness, and as for applying for planning permission to yourself, well the whole thing is scandalous

its about time the council recycled more range of plastics too – even if they cant collect it, put out some skips for it please, other councils including neighbouring telford and powys all do mixed plastic recycling now and it would avoid the need for the burner because half my bin is yoghurt pots and butter dishes and plastics which the council wont recycle

the ever improving recycling rate combined with massive declines in waste tonnages locally and nationally since the improved packaging agreements have kicked in are proof enough for me that the incinerator is not neccessary, there is simply no need

In Oswestry we have kerbside collection FOR DRINKS CONTAINERS ONLY.

Until last week there was a collection point for all plastics at Stans Store in St Martins and presumably other locations.

A notice appeared there saying that this facility would be withdrawn due to kerbside collection.

    Nice one Shropshire Council.

Net result is that I am putting large ammounts of plastic back in the ordinary waste, thus landfill. My wheelie bin is now over 3/4 full as opposed to under 1/2 full previously.

One pace forward two back. Stunning.

atleast he says thankyou, all the people whoe recycle can be very proud of their effort and to be fair the council have done a reasoable job, the food waste collection being weekly here is a fantastic service which makes a massive reduction to the amount i chuck out now, apparently the conservatives are goging to make all waste collections weekly again which is a good thing

Tony makes a very good point, shropshire council are cutting recycling services ever since unitary council was started, they promised to go up to the best level of the best districts but they are going backwards in 2008 South Shropshire Council was the 5th best council in the UK for recycling at around 58.2% but now the council is recycling less and less and cutting back on key front line services across the county like collections of batteries in Shrewsbury, community skip services and now the plastic skips too, this is outrageous

since that french firm took over basic service standard has gone right down hill, they are cutting costs right left and centre and have terrible customer service chucking the boxes around and leaving behind all the clothes i put out for recycling, i cant be bothered, i do their work for them from now on ill just chuck it in the bin instead see how they like that
