£27m supermarket plan stalls

Plans for a £27 million supermarket complex in Telford have stalled after a last-minute objection by Asda. It is the latest blow in a battle over the scheme.
Telford Shopping Centre owner Hark Apollo originally courted Asda in the hope of making it the flagship store in the proposed new development on Red Oak car park – next to the current store in the town centre.
After Asda spurned the offer and pushed ahead with plans to move out of the town centre to the Telford & Wrekin Council civic offices site, Hark delayed Asda’s plans by a month after lodging an 11th-hour objection.
A similar delay now faces Hark after its application was deferred at a meeting of the borough council’s plans board last night following a late objection.
Telford & Wrekin Council spokeswoman Catherine Roche confirmed today the objection had been submitted by Asda. The reasons have not yet been revealed.
At the meeting, chairman Councillor Ian Fletcher said: “We have very recently received a detailed objection to this application from another retailer in the area.
“On discussion and consultation with the barrister, it’s felt these objections have to be considered and passed to the applicant.”
Councillors agreed to defer their decision.
Hark director Rob Cossey said the proposal had received 96 per cent public backing in response to a wide-ranging consultation exercise conducted at the end of last year.
He said the total investment from the project would be £27 million and 400 to 600 jobs would be created in the long-term.
The supermarket would be 7,950 sq m in size. The plans also include up to 2,810 sq m of smaller shops, banks, restaurants, pubs, bars and offices.
