Hospital shake-up still on cards

Health bosses are still working on plans to reshape hospital services in Shropshire but it will be months before details are made public, they said today.
They have had to take another look at the options for change in the light of a harsh squeeze on public sector funding.
Controversial proposals presented last year included concentrating vascular surgery and in-patient paediatrics on one site, prompting strong fears in Telford & Wrekin that the Princess Royal Hospital would lose out and be downgraded.
The idea of building a £500 million hospital to deal with emergency and major cases has been scrapped.
A joint statement from Simon Conolly, chief executive of NHS Telford & Wrekin; Jo Chambers, chief executive of Shropshire County Primary Care Trust; and Trish Rowson, interim chief executive of the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust said the position remained “un-changed” from earlier this year when they confirmed that the options needed to be reviewed because of the economic crisis.
“Our immediate priority is to work with local communities and NHS staff to decide whether the current A&E and acute surgery services can be sustained on both hospital sites,” said the statement.
“This is work is still under way.”
