Councillors say they want to visit a tourist railway project near Oswestry before committing thousands of pounds of public money to the scheme, which aims to be a tourist attraction.

Enthusiasts have been working for years to develop the Tanat Valley Light Railway.

The Tanat Valley Light Railway independent railway preservation group owns a 1.25 mile stretch of the Nant Mawr branch railway line and have been working to develop the site.

Their efforts took a major step forward in November last year when they ran a steam train on the line for the first time in more than 40 years.

The event was attended by council dignitaries, including Shropshire Council leader Keith Barrow.

But an application by the Tanat Valley Light Railway for funding from the area’s local joint committee community fund has been put on hold, a meeting will hear on Thursday.

The meeting of the St Oswald and Llanymymech Joint Committee will hear that the group had asked for £2,000 to fund fencing along the side of the railway track.

But a report said it had been recommended that the bid should be deferred and looked at again at a further round of the community fund. The report added: “Funding has been deferred pending a site visit and consideration of options, level of funding requested and alternative funding sources.”

However, the report added that funding had been recommended for various other community initiatives in the area.

Among the recommendations, which are likely to be given the go-ahead by councillors at Thursday’s meeting, are a grant of £1,000 to Llanymynech Good Companions Committee to cover transport costs, £269 to Maesbrook Village Hall to replace water heaters and improve signage and £1,100 to Morton Minors Choir.

Lets hope that they will commit the money, as I feel it will bring many people into Oswestry and help boost the tourism, which many on the town council have been pushing to do.
