Concern at plan for 1,000 homes

Residents have hit out at plans which could see up to 1,000 homes built around a south Shropshire market town, claiming they could lead to traffic chaos and environmental concerns.

The Ludlow and Clee Hill area has been earmarked by Shrosphire Council for between 500 and 1,000 new homes by 2026.

The plans were discussed at a public meeting of Ludford Parish Council last night. The proposed sites include The Sheet, Rock’s Green and Ludford.

Tom Carter, council chairman, said the homes plans had come as a “shock” and said it was important residents had a say about them.

Imogen Liddle, council vice-chairman, said: “If this sort of development carried on, it would essentially change the nature of the town as we all know it and have known it for a considerable period of time.”

Resident Les Lumsdon said: “I’m very concerned about this. This is coming to us top down like a thunderball, it’s not acceptable.”

Duncan White said: “Ludlow is a bit of a jewel, one of its facets is the southern and western approach, if we can’t fight this sort of thing, then nobody can.”

Martin Taylor-Smith, Shropshire Council portfolio holder for strategic planning and a Ludlow town councillor, attended the meeting.

He said: “As the portfolio holder, the buck stops with me, we are not doing this as an academic exercise. I can genuinely say this is a bottom up exercise. Not a single thing in this document, other than the number of houses, is a given.

“We want houses that can keep people living in Ludlow. You’re looking at something for schools, medical facilities, infrastructure, this document covers all of it, we are asking you what you want.”

Well there needs to be affordable housing built for the young people who grow up in this area otherwise the area will die relying totally on tourists, wealthy home owners and those who are from outside the area.
Another case of the NIMBY syndrome.

I must say I was extremely disappointed with the houses at The Rocks near Ludlow which I went to see recently, as they had won a sustainability award.
I thought that the designs were not successful and the construction quality was very poor.
I still think that the millenium village development at Ketley is really, really nice design and high quality. The attractive rural site of The Rocks at Ludlow was so lovely it should have been a fantastic development too.
