Star unites with stores to support charities

Monday 10th May 2010, 11:47AM BST.

The Shropshire Star today launches a special fundraising initiative to support two great causes and to mark Local Newspaper Week 2010.

The paper will be donating 10p from every copy of the Shropshire Star sold at any branch of Tesco and Asda this week to help boost the funds of charities backed by the two supermarkets.

The proceeds raised from the scheme will go to Tesco’s charity of the year Clic Sargent, which helps children and young people with cancer, and to Asda’s Tickled Pink campaign to help fight breast cancer.

The Shropshire Star’s sister paper the Express & Star will also be taking part in the initiative.

“We’re delighted to have joined forces with Asda and Tesco to support their fantastic charities, Tickled Pink and Clic Sargent – helping Children with Cancer,” said Jason Bate, head of casual sales at the Shropshire Star and Express & Star.

“Local Newspaper Week gives us the perfect opportunity to focus on the importance and impact of the local press on our communities.

“Shropshire Star readers can enjoy their newspaper in the knowledge that they’ve also helped some very worthwhile causes. Together we really can make a difference.”

This year’s Local Newspaper Week, organised by the Newspaper Society, takes place from today with the theme of Your Voice.
