Shop is granted licence to sell alcohol

Monday 10th May 2010, 11:40AM BST.

A new community shop in Shrewsbury has been granted permission to sell alcohol, despite fears it may become a magnet for anti-social behaviour.

The premises in Moston Road, Sundorne, which is part of a £2.7 million redevelopment, will be allowed to sell alcohol from 10am to 8pm, seven days a week.

New figures show anti-social behaviour has fallen by 37 per cent since the removal of the old shops along with garages and some bungalows to make way for the community shop and 27 homes.

The application for a premises licence was granted by Shropshire Council’s central licensing sub-committee today.

Shropshire councillor Malcolm Price, for applicant Sunil Patel, said instances of anti-social behaviour had dropped by 37 per cent since work began.

He said: “The biggest part of this change is the community, and the community has bought into this change and do not want it to go back to how it was before.”

But one letter of objection raised fears it would give the “green light” for local youths to gather and would encourage the return of anti-social behaviour.

The licensing conditions include the operation of digital CCTV cameras, with recordings being kept for 28 days and being made available to the police when requested.
