Police seize large drug haul

A haul of mephedrone with a street value of £20,000 was seized in a raid by Telford police in the first case since the drug was made illegal last month.

A team of officers raided a property in Aqueduct and seized a “significant” amount of the drug, which was made illegal after it was linked to deaths across the UK.

Detective Sergeant Mark Bellamy, of Telford CID, said a 31-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply and released on police bail pending further inquiries.

Mr Bellamy said: “After executing a warrant under the Misuse of Drugs Act at an address in Aqueduct, we recovered a large amount of the illegal drug mephedrone.

“This is the first arrest we have made in relation to the supply of the drug since it was made illegal last month.

“This was a significant seizure and has prevented a large quantity of the drug reaching the streets.

“As a team we are committed to taking all illegal drugs off the streets of Telford and keeping people safe.

“We will not tolerate the use of this drug and will target any individuals either using it or dealing it.”

The drug was made illegal after the government acted on advice from the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs (ACMD).

The order to include mephedrone on the list of Class B drugs was approved without a vote.

Class B drugs carry a maximum sentence of five years for possession or 14 years for supply. A campaign has now been launched to tell people about the risks of taking the drug, including in hospitals and schools.

Anyone wishing to report drug crime in Telford should call Telford police on 0300 333 3000 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
