Ex-recycling boss spared jail over pollution
Saturday 8th May 2010, 8:16AM BST.
The director of a fridge recycling company on the Shropshire/Mid Wales border has been spared an immediate prison sentence after being found guilty of causing pollution to the environment and risking harm to human health.
Robert Sant, 37, the former director of Bromfield Industrial Services, of Ludlow Road, Knighton, was convicted of breaching a condition of a waste management licence between April 1, 2005, and November 21, 2007.
He was also found guilty of treating, keeping, or disposing of controlled waste in a manner likely to cause pollution to the environment or harm to human health between the same dates.
At Shrewsbury Crown Court yesterday he was sentenced to 52 weeks in prison, suspended for two years, on each count, to run concurrently. He was also ordered to carry out 300 hours unpaid work and pay £15,000 towards the prosecution costs of £252,000.
Judge Robin Onions said: “It is perfectly clear that the jury accepted that this site was not being run properly. My assessment of you is that you knew what was going on at that company. It is apparent that you challenged the evidence of the whistle-blowers but the jury accepted their evidence.”
