Teenager in critical condition

Wednesday 5th May 2010, 1:42PM BST.

A teenager is in a critical condition in hospital after the car he was driving smashed into a lamppost in Telford, leaving the road closed for several hours.

He was rushed to the town’s Princess Royal Hospital after the accident on the A5223 Lawley Drive, near to Tesco in Newdale, at about 9.30pm last night.

The road was closed until almost 4am today to allow police to make the area safe.

Telford police spokesman Chris Ammonds said the driver was “very poorly” this morning and in a critical condition.

Another teenager, who was a passenger in the Ford Escort Cabriolet car, suffered a minor cut to the head and was also taken to Princess Royal Hospital.

“There will be signs going up in the area this morning appealing for witnesses and we would appeal to anyone who can help us work out what happened to come forward,” Mr Ammonds said.

Anyone with information on the crash is urged to call Telford police on 0300 333 3000.

This stretch of road needs average speed cameras. Not a gatso(slow down, speed up)type.
I do hope this young man makes a full recovery.
Also ANY driver that holds a licence for less than twelve months involved in this type of accident(single vehicle)should have licence revoked for 12 months and made resit a test.

This road certainly needs average speed cameras, an accident has been on the cards for some time and it’s unfortunate one has occured before action is taken.

Here’s hoping some form of speed enforecement is put in place.
