Bypass bid ‘could end village rat run’

Saturday 1st May 2010, 10:59AM BST.

Shrewsbury’s proposed North West Relief Road could stop motorists using a village near Oswestry as a rat run, it was claimed today.

Ruyton-XI-Towns villagers say the area is used as a short cut, particularly by HGV drivers.

And they have spent years asking for something to be done about it.

Shropshire councillor Aggie Caesar-Homden said villagers hoped the planned new route would help traffic problems in the village.

She said: “Villagers are concerned about lorries using the village as a cut-through. Some feel that in theory the relief road could ease traffic.

“Motorists going to some areas of Shrewsbury might use the new road rather than coming through here.”

She added: “People here are still concerned about lorries coming through the village. Their concerns led to a HGV survey being carried out to find out why the lorries were coming through.

“While we recognise the majority of these vehicles are coming through because they have to, we would hope those who don’t would use the relief road if it was built.”

An exhibition recently looked at the impact the new road would have on the village. It was one of several organised by Shropshire Council to consult on the planned road. The consultation enables residents to view the details of the project and identify its benefits and negative impacts.

A special development services scrutiny committee will also be held in July.

The consultation feedback will be considered by the council in August.
