Top council jobs axed to cut costs
Friday 30th April 2010, 11:27AM BST.
Telford & Wrekin Council has axed a third of its senior managers who all earned at least £75,000-a-year, it was revealed today. The jobs cull is part of a cost-cutting drive ahead of demands for cuts in public spending.
News of the cuts at the council’s highest level come after it was revealed that 15 per cent of all posts at the authority, equating to about 400 jobs, will have to go to rein in spending.
A total of seven senior managers at the authority have so far lost their jobs, which equates to an annual saving of more than £500,000 from the wage bill footed by taxpayers.
Telford & Wrekin Council’s chief executive Victor Brownlees said: “I think all the political parties have recognised that public finances are going to be under severe pressure in local government at the next review. We recognised that ourselves and already had plans in place to significantly reduce our costs.
“We have reduced senior management jobs by a third in the last year and we will be continuing to target savings, firstly by efficiencies, but want to work to protect frontline public services for as long as we can. We are planning to reduce what the council spends on staff by 15 per cent over the next three years.”
Mr Brownlees could not rule out compulsory job losses, but said all efforts would be made to concentrate on vacant posts and voluntary redundancies.
