Report Oswestry arsonist plea ‘before lives are lost’
Friday 30th April 2010, 11:27AM BST.
People were today urged to call police if they know the identity of an arsonist targeting Oswestry “before lives are lost”.
Fire crime officer Derek Taylor made the call as concern remains over arson attacks in the town.
The attacks, particularly in the Castlefields and Swan Lane areas, prompted town firefighters to attend a series of public meetings to give reassurance and advice to worried residents.
The latest meeting took place on Wednesday at the Albert Road Evangelical Church. Mr Taylor said: “Our community fire safety team and local firefighter are working in partnership with the police and the council to look at this.
“These fires involve wheelie bins being set alight. We had a couple of wheelie bin fires in other parts of the country recently which had tragic consequences.”
He added: “I would ask anyone with information about what is going on in Oswestry to come forward before lives are lost.
“They must consider that arson attacks can cost lives and the victims could be a loved one or a friend.
“These attacks are happening in the early hours of the morning and involve wheelie bins so somebody must know something.
“Some of the fires have spread to properties which is obviously a concern for residents.
“We are being very proactive in dealing with this. Not only have we attended public meetings, we have also organised leaflet drops in Swan Lane and Castlefields to get the message out about the dangers of fire.”
