Blue badge parking time limit plans are unveiled
Friday 30th April 2010, 12:00AM BST.
Plans were today unveiled to introduce a time limit on parking spaces for blue badge holders in a Shropshire market town after some drivers were accused of “hogging the spaces”.
The complaints prom-pted Shropshire Council to look more closely at the waiting restrictions in disabled bays in Ludlow and if the plan goes ahead a three-hour waiting limit could be imposed by the summer.
Joyce Ellis, for the Ludlow Community Car Scheme, said that many people who own the blue badges which allow them to park in disabled bays around the town are backing the plan.
Currently drivers can leave their cars there all day, but other disabled badge holders have complained it does not give them a chance to make use of the spaces.
Mrs Ellis said: “I think it is going to be great for them. We are not going to have one person hogging a disabled bay 24/7 and we are not going to have one person parking there all day.”
“Blue badge holders are welcoming the move. It gives somebody else a chance to park in a disabled bay, Broad Street is particularly difficult. I think it should be done before the festival arrives.”
Glyn Shaw, Shropshire Council’s senior engineer, said: “We will shortly consult with blue badge holders re-garding our proposals to int-roduce three-hour limited waiting for the disabled bays within the town centre. If no objections are received, these could be in place by July.”
The calls for time restrictions on disabled spaces first came in September last year.
Mrs Ellis approached MP Philip Dunne and Town Councillor Vivienne Parry to help find a solution. There are 32 disabled parking bays in Ludlow in the red and blue parking zones, including 21 in the town centre.
