A 31-year-old Shrewsbury man stole charity boxes from a shop and a service station to fund his heroin addiction, a court heard.

Daryl Rattew, of Radbrook Hall Court, Radbrook, distracted staff at both The Mount Service Station and Robsons Stores in Sundorne on separate occasions before using scissors to cut string holding charity boxes to the till.

Shrewsbury Magistrates Court heard yesterday that he stole a box containing £30 for Mencap, a charity helping people with learning disabilities and their families, and one with £9 for Help for Heroes, a charity helping wounded servicemen and women.

Rattew yesterday admitted two charges of theft and said he was ashamed of what he had done. Magistrates adjourned the case until May 19 for a full pre-sentence report to be prepared and Rattew was granted conditional bail.

Mrs Becci Jones, prosecuting, said that on September 26 last year Rattew entered The Mount service station and while paying, asked the attendant for a certain type of oil causing him to turn his back.

She said Rattew then used a pair of scissors to cut a Mencap charity box away from the till before hiding it in his jacket and walking out after paying for the fuel.

He was arrested on April 16 by police who traced him after he used his bank card to pay for his fuel and admitted he had taken the box.

On April 4 Rattew entered Robsons Stores and diverted the attention of a staff member before stealing a Help for Heroes charity box and leaving the store. Mrs Jones said Rattew took the £9 from the box, which he later used to buy heroin.
