River body identified as ex-gardener

Thursday 29th April 2010, 11:00AM BST.

A man pulled from a river near a Shropshire village has been formally identified as 69-year-old Peter Cooke.

The body of Mr Cooke, from Childs Ercall, was recovered by firefighters from the River Tern at Peplow, near Market Drayton, on Tuesday morning.

Today family and friends paid tribute to Mr Cooke, whom they said would be sadly missed.

His sister-in-law, Glenys Cooke, from near Lichfield, said he was very well known in the village as he was involved in the local darts and dominoes scene.

She said: “He was just a character really.”

She added Mr Cooke, was originally from Puddington, The Wirral, was one of five siblings, was not married and was retired having worked as a gardener at Peplow Hall.

Neighbour and close friend, Andrew Beckett, said Mr Cooke was like a grandfather figure to his daughter. “He is going to be sadly missed,” he said.

Police said they were not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.
