Barrier considered to protect market
Thursday 29th April 2010, 10:35AM BST.
New heavy duty removable anti-crash barriers could be installed at a Shropshire market to prevent a repeat of a horrific crash which saw a car plough into terrified shoppers and traders.
Bridgnorth Town Council is considering fitting the new state-of-the-art plastic bollards to replace fixed heavy metal posts demolished in the crash when a car ploughed into stalls at the market hall on April 16.
It is also investigating plans to reposition the bollards to cut the risk of a repetition of the “freak” accident which left 14 people injured.
Locum town clerk Anne Wilson said the authority was looking at ways of improving safety measures at the market, which takes place every Friday and Saturday, underneath the Town Hall in High Street.
Ms Wilson said: “The safety of the market stallholders and shoppers is most important.
“Although it was a freak accident and highly unlikely to happen again, we are going to look at the costs of repositioning and replacing the bollards,” she added.
Meanwhile, councillors are set to begin their own probe into the incident at a special meeting tonight.
Members of the council will discuss the causes of the incident and the safety of stallholders at an extraordinary meeting of the authority.
They will look at the quotes for the cost of the new safety measures and decide on action to avoid a similar incident occurring.
Stallholders and some councillors have called for a ban on market day traffic in the High Street following the crash. But Ms Wilson stressed that pedestrianisation of the High Street was not a consideration.
Police have also renewed an appeal for witnesses.
Officers are urging shoppers who may have seen the incident to come forward with any information which may help the investigation.
“Our inquiries are ongoing at this stage,” said West Mercia Police spokeswoman Maria Hawkaluk.
“Anyone with information who has not yet spoken to police is asked to get in touch on 0300 3333000.”
One man is still in hospital following the incident.
