Sex hotspot public toilets to remain closed
Wednesday 28th April 2010, 12:31PM BST.
Public toilets in the centre of Shrewsbury will remain closed for a further month after warnings from police that the site is a hotspot for a sexual practice known as “cottaging”.
Councillor Malcolm Price, of Shrewsbury Town Council, said the decision had been taken unanimously by the authority to close the dilapidated toilets in Butcher Row in February after receiving police advice.
Mr Price said West Mercia Police had warned the authority that the lavatories were being advertised on a national website for groups of men to meet up for anonymous sex.
The council said it had closed the men’s toilets after councillors heard that there were concerns the behaviour could jeopardise the safety of members of the public and of staff.
Mr Price said it was hoped the toilets would now either be given a makeover or demolished.
He said: “The toilets were on a national website to do with cottaging. Apparently we were on that site and people were coming from all over the country to Butcher Row toilets. We had that information from West Mercia Police who told us what was going on.
Monitor
“Hence we closed them pretty much immediately. We are going to monitor it and then make a decision about what we do which could mean demolishing it and building a new toilet block at ground level.”
Mr Price said the council’s other toilets were currently undergoing a programme of refurbishment and were being upgraded.
Sergeant Claire Greenaway, of West Mercia Police, said: “Town centre police officers were invited to a closed meeting of the council in February where the issue of toilets in the town centre as a whole was discussed.
“We advised about anti-social behaviour in and around the toilets, including incidents of a sexual nature. Following complaints about this behaviour, we monitored the premises and several individuals were arrested and cautioned.
“The council also had concerns about building maintenance issues and the lack of disabled access at the Butcher Row toilets and took the decision to close them as part of its capital programme for the provision and maintenance of toilets in the town centre.
“It said the future of facilities in the Butcher Row area will be the subject of further discussion.”

What happens if I have to relieve myself up a wall somewhere because the lavatories are closed?

these toilets are disgusting and should be demolised and replaced asap.

These toilets were a disgrace from the day they were built . Knock them down and build some decent ones with some suitable security.

Close all public toilets . Any shop over a certain size should then be made to provide toilet facilities for its customers .Very USA and a very good idea if i say so myself.

A real shame, I have been looking for a good cottaging spot for years and now its getting closed.

Oh well looks like its the dingle from now on, always wondered why they close it so early…

public toilets should be like they use to be: with a 24 hour guard that kept the place clean, tidy and safe. Mind you these days the guard would need to be armed with a gun to keep the druggies out and so on. At least it would create jobs!

Very strange. A public facility closed rather than have the police do their job and clamp down on this abnormal activity. What are the people of Shrewsbury paying their rates for. Looks like an easy option to me.

My boyfriend has a condition that means when he needs to go he needs to go. He has already become nervous about going out and about due to worrying about the fact there might not be any toilets around and doesn’t want to have to go into a pub or shop to ask to use the loo only to be told no.
Sort it out!

It is a lovely design, an asset architecturally to the town but a shame about the use.
I had an unpleasant experience recently when walking the dog on Haughmond Hill. Will we close that down too?

Tim at #8 refers to how public toilets used to have a guard. Not in my memory. Certain more exclusive public facilities may have had an attendant but that is very different to a guard. Despite Tim’s protestations about today he seems to be harking back with nostalgic glasses to a more dangerous time. How strange.

We used to laugh in the old days,(late 1950′s) about public toilets in France and Italy that were just wrap around metal. They showed the feet and the head of men inside.
It seems they new something! Bring them back and bring them to England.

Disgusting!!
Its obviously a cop out for the council, if they had maintained the toilets properly they wouldnt be in a state and if they had an attendant they wouldnt have the problems with anti social behaviour etc.
Its just a ploy to get them closed. My mate was in town the other day bursting for the loo and found them shut so he just ran downstairs to the ladies to do his business. What do the council expect??
