Ambitious proposals to create a £9 million tourist and culture centre near Oswestry have taken a major step forward.

Councillors agreed yesterday to enter talks with promoters of the Dragon Tower project about providing land for the scheme just off the A5 at Halton.

The project proposes the building of a dragon sculpture on top of a 100 foot high tower on land owned by Wrexham Council.

The Frank Wingett Cancer Appeal, which is developing the plans, say the Dragon Tower will rival landmarks such as The Angel of the North.

The facility will create 70 jobs and will include a viewing tower over the Oswestry area, a Welsh culture interpretation centre and an art gallery.

Members of Wrexham Council’s executive board agreed yesterday to grant an option on the land to the cancer appeal to enable the charity to develop the project.

The agreement is subject to the granting of planning permission and the satisfactory conclusion for the terms of sale.

A council officer’s report said Chirk councillors were in favour of the project. The report outlined the benefits of the ambitious plans.

It said: “It is estimated that the fees received from the visitor charges will create a £1 million pound plus income, per year, for the Frank Wingett Cancer Appeal.”

This is a truly wonderful idea. It’s pleasing to know that Wrexham Council is able to spend its money on worthwhile schemes unlike Shropshire Council with its backward ways.

I suggest Shropshire Council build an even bigger tower and pop a statue of St George on it facing the dragon! Then we will be even.

I don’t think its in the interests of a multi-cultural society for Wales to display such a symbol of favouritism and bias towards its own people and heritage. I think it would be much more appropriate to have (approx) 200 flags, with each of the world nations represented.

Recession comes to mind. Obviously Wrexham council have got money to burn, what else would 9 million pounds buy. I wonder, this stinks of Racism by the Welsh against the English. I am sure if we put a statue of St George there with a massive George Cross we would hear the complaints from across the border. If you are English and live in WALES you are the victim of Racism on a daily basis.

Waste of money in my opinion.

This will signal to the world that Wales has no culture and is prepared to erect a gimmicky,’DR Who’ monster on a pedestal.

    Have they no taste?
