Road chaos after lorry jack-knifes
Saturday 24th April 2010, 11:52AM BST.
Motorists suffered rush-hour delays when a lorry jack-knifed after colliding with a car causing chaos. Drivers had to be diverted through narrow streets.
The HGV collided with a saloon car on the A458 Bridgnorth bypass just after 4pm yesterday.
Motorists queued for more than an hour to weave their way through the market town’s congested streets.
Traffic was diverted through Salop Street, Hollybush Road, Underhill Street and Bridgnorth Street before rejoining the bypass.
Firefighters were called to the scene and a protective boom was placed around the lorry, which came to rest in the middle of the road, in case the 30 tonnes of fertilizer concrete it was transporting should leak.
One crew from Bridgnorth, along with a crew and the environment pod from Tweedale, Telford, were sent to the scene, along with the incident commander from Shrewsbury.
The lorry was eventually recovered but it took several hours before traffic was flowing freely again.
Experts from Shropshire Council’s highways department were also called to assist in case the lorry should spill its load.
No one was injured in the incident.
In a separate incident, three people were taken to hospital after an estate car overturned in Holyhead Road, Bicton, Shrewsbury, at about 3.15pm yesterday.
West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman Chris Kowalik said three people were taken by land ambulance to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital – a man with neck pain, a woman with back pain and a child with a mouth injury.
He added: “One patient was collared and boarded and all three were taken to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.”
Firefighters made the scene safe.
