Food outlets rated in council scheme
Saturday 24th April 2010, 9:51AM BST.
Health and hygiene ratings for about 60 more restaurants, takeaways and other food outlets in Telford & Wrekin have been released.
The Princess Royal Hospital was among 13 to get the top five-star rating, while two takeaways – Mauchak in Ketley and Sunshine Cafe in Oakengates – were the only ones to get no stars. Premises with the highest standards in food hygiene and safety, structure and confidence in management get five stars, those with the lowest get zero stars.
All premises scoring two stars or above comply with the law, Telford & Wrekin Council, which has handed the ratings out, said.
Any star rating can be withdrawn if a business’s standards are found to have dropped at a later inspection.
And if a business improves, it has the ability to let customers know through the “right to reply” feature on the website at www.telford.gov.uk/scoresonthedoors
Ian Mercer, of the council’s public protection department, said: “Scores on the Doors is coming to the end of its second year now and is a very well used and successful scheme for residents and visitors to Telford and Wrekin.
“We set up the scheme purely to drive up standards of food hygiene in the borough and to enable people to make their own, informed choices on where to eat and buy food. I am certain that businesses want a good Scores on the Doors rating because they understand that good hygiene standards are good for business.”
In the latest round of inspections two establishments got no stars, 11 got one star, three got two stars, 13 picked up three stars, 15 gained four stars and 13 got five stars, including Grays Hotel in Telford.
The website was launched in 2008 with the aim of giving residents more details to make an informed choice about where to eat and buy food in Telford.
It is the only scheme of its kind in Shropshire and businesses can display their Scores on the Doors certificate at their premises. Establishments inspected include pubs, restaurants and school kitchens.
