Town’s Saturday market gets the axe

Friday 23rd April 2010, 10:11AM BST.

Traders at a north Shropshire market today spoke of their disappointment that it is to be axed after just six weeks after becoming a victim of its own success.

Thousands of people had been flocking to the new Saturday market and car boot on Adderley Road in Market Drayton. But organisers have pulled the plug on the event following complaints about traffic chaos as it caused a backlog of traffic and parking problems.

Ray Gall, director with Town and Country Markets said: “We are really disappointed to have to close this event when there is clearly such a demand for it.”

Today Roger Hughes, Shropshire Councillor for Market Drayton, said: “I thought it would do the town good, but unfortunately it became a victim of its own success, particularly the last two weekends with the amount of traffic.”

He said traders in the nearby business park were hit as customers struggled to get to them.

Mike Roberts, who ran Styche Hall Farm Fayre of Market Drayton at the market, said he was disappointed it had closed.

“We thought we’d got a real good market beginning. It was a fair market but we were inundated with car booters. We have now got to find somewhere else to trade.”

Wolverhampton-based Norman Kellar, who ran a fruit and veg stall at the market, said: “We were doing very well. It’s a shame.”
