Arson attack on family home
Thursday 22nd April 2010, 1:06PM BST.
A mother and her four children had a lucky escape when 15ft flames shot up the front of their Shropshire home in an arson attack this morning.
The children and their mother were asleep when the attack happened just after midnight. They were woken up after a passing neighbour started banging on their front door.
Firefighters said the house in Hollinswood, Telford, was just minutes away from going up in flames after a wheelie bin was set on fire. The flames spread to the gas mains.
Ten firefighters tackled the blaze. Fire investigators and the police also went to the scene.
Craig Jackson, crew manager at Tweedale Fire Station, said: “This was serious. When we got there it was quite obvious that a gas main was alight, there were 15ft flames.”
Firefighter Glen Crookshank, from Telford Fire Station, said: “It definitely would have spread, another 10 minutes and it would have been very serious, it was deliberate.
“The family were visibly shaken but I think the mother was more concerned about the children. They were lucky someone was passing the house. It’s just silly putting people’s lives at risk .”
The house was not damaged and gas workers were called out to switch off the supply.
