Delays expected amid A5 crash inquiry

Traffic using the A5 on the Shropshire border are likely to face delays on Wednesday while police investigators work at the scene of a collision in which two men died.

The viaduct over the River Ceiriog on the Chirk bypass will be partly closed between 10am and 10.30am.

Northbound traffic will be diverted through Chirk with southbound vehicles able to use the A5, travelling slowly under a police escort.

The section of road effected by the temporary delays will be between Gledrid and Halton roundabouts.

West Mercia Police Collision Investigator, Constable Lois Ellis said the restrictions would only be for a short time, no more than half an hour.

“They are necessary to allow photographs to be taken on the approach to the collision scene at Chirk viaduct from both directions.”

It follows the collision on March 22 involving a cattle lorry a tanker and a car. The drivers of a Mercedes car, Stuart Davies, of Mold, and a livestock lorry, Hefin Jones, of Cardigan, Ceredigion, were killed and the A5 closed for several days while safety work and repairs were carried out to the bridge.

Cattle plunged 100 feet to their deaths when the livestock lorry was left hanging over the parapet of the viaduct.

Following the tragedy there have been calls for safety measures on the viaduct and a Facebook campaign has been launched.
