Quarry ‘not used to its full potential’
Monday 15th February 2010, 8:48AM GMT.

The Quarry was a sea of brollies and wet clothing at last July's 80s concert
A host of events – including concerts, shows and charity fundraisers – will take place at a Shrewsbury’s Quarry park this year — but one councillor claims it is still not being used to its “full potential”.
The Quarry will be the venue for a number of live music nights as well as annual events such as the flower show, and Shrewsbury Town Council has outlined plans to make more use of the park’s bandstand.
At a meeting of the council’s recreation and leisure committee last week members outlined a diary of events which includes a spring fair from March 30 to April 10, Shrewsbury Regatta on May 9 and 10 and a performance by Chester City Brass Band on July 4.
- Quarry concerts – sound restrictions criticised
- Quarry concert – in pictures
- Quarry concert “too quiet”
- 10,000 mile trip for Carol singing
But speaking at the committee meeting Councillor Jon Tandy said he would like to see more live music events at the park.
He said: “We could make more use of the Quarry, I just feel we’re not using it to its maximum potential.
“People love going to concerts at night, we should have more events like that.”
The Quarry is licensed to host 10 live music events a year and in the past it has attracted Travis and acts including The Human League, Go West, T’Pau and Bananarama, who performed to 10,000 people at a Back to the 80s concert last summer.
Council clerk Helen Ball said: “The policy is designed so that we can’t have more than 10 concerts without having to apply for individual licences. Once the policy is up for renewal we could apply to have more events at that point.”
Councillor Tandy said he would like changes to the licence to be discussed at a future meeting.
Mike Cox, the council’s outdoor recreation and asset manager, said they had been approached by the Town Centre Residents’ Association who wanted to make more use of the bandstand.
He said: “Chester City Brass Band are coming to perform so hopefully this will stimulate some interest and we’ll get local bands asking if they can play in the Quarry as well.”
The summer concerts are provisionally set to take place on July 9 and 10.
Chris Bailey, from IML Concerts which organised last year’s 80s music event, said they were still negotiating contracts with artists.
He said: “We know who we’d like to present on the Friday night but contracts are still being discussed.
“The Saturday concert is an open book at this stage but we should have an idea in three to four weeks.”

Its not going to get much better than the Chester City Brass Band……..The Town Centre Residents Society blue rinse brigade will make sure of that..

@ spencer – agreed, anything resembling contemporary music is ignored wholesale in Shrewsbury. The theatre especially is a massive missed opportunity (unless you fancy going to see a ukelele concert!). I’ve tried telling them that there are loads of people who would pay to see popular bands but they’re just not interested.

Spencer & Truth Truth…
Spot on both comments. This town will never musically prosper while the nimbys at the council are in charge.
As for the Severn Theatre, don’t expect any decent bands I’ve emailed the Operations manager for the last two seasons asking where are the bands? My answer “We are looking at this type of live music for next season” So don’t hold your breath!
It’s a fitting tribute that you get 10,000 at the 80′s concert, which shows what taxpayers really want to see there…..

Oh dear Mr tandy looking for votes for may??. The quarry is a place for all tax payers to enjoy including the blue rinse lot and the young, paid events block free access this has to be taken into consideration when considering the paid use of the quarry.
Also how long before councill tax goes up yet again to pay for extras needed at the quarry when stageing the events as long as those that attend the event pick up the tab then that is great. However saying all that I prefer the more open access areas so my point is based mainly on when and if they intend to pass on the cost to the council tax payer.

Is there a need to charge local bands to play in the quarry bandstand? Unfortunately this is the situation at present.

Wouldn’t it make more sense to use the West Mid Showground?

I’ve been to three concerts already this year, all small bands. Two were in Manchester and the other in Hebdon Bridge. On each occasion i spent at least £100 on accomodaton, food, beer and merchandise, None of which were purchased at large out of town retail parks or Tesco……..Can you see where i’m going with this..

Birmingham NEC, presumably.

What happend to the proms events in The Quarry?

I agree West Mid Showground would be better. The Quarry is a park for all to enjoy.

#6 It doesn’t make money for the town if the events are held at the West Mid Showground, Sammy. We need the footfall in the town centre.
What we really need is a footbridge from the Showground then we could have the best of both worlds though I would like the Quarry to be used far more personally but not just for just older folk type music.

Even the Westmid isn’t used to it’s full potential.Whoever is in charge of promoting the Westmid needs to get their act together(or is their nobody in charge now?)Congratulations to Alan Surtees who is in charge of the Shrewsbury Folk Festival who has the vision to put on this event each year.As for the Quarry you will always have problems in putting live groups on,even for mmore than 10 times a year. The surrounding residents will always object even if it is only once a year. The Quarry needs to be used to it’s full potential like John Tandy has said.Paid events do block access that’s the nature of them, but only when they are taking place not all year round.I’m sure people aren’t bothered if access is blocked for a very small amount of time.

i also agree that the quarry is a load of wasted space, however i think that the council would be better advised to make it more like telford town park, than a mud bath arena. for the concerts they should use the west mid show ground which again is a load of wasted space. as for it not generating money for the town if they use west mid, i disagree all the local b&b places in coton hill would thrive.i also don’t see how holding concerts at night or the flower show is generating buisness for the town. bring back the cheap jacks in the market on flower show. in fact all this council has done is take trade away from the town, you only have to look at all the empty shops to see that.

indeed a quarry could be dug for rock!

What, like keep selling areas off for building?

I don’t understand why the town centre residents committee have such sway. Can we not ignore them? If you choose to live next to a school you expect to hear screaming kids every playtime. Live near the ambulance station, you get sirens. Live in the town centre you should expect to have both the disadvantages and disadvantages of doing so. The Quarry is for the people of Shrewsbury and our wishes far outnumber the wishes of those who choose to live there. If we want concerts playing loud music until 11 o’clock at night then we should get them. If they don’t like it buy some ear plugs, move house, or better still…join in with the fun. They gave up their rights to a convenient and quiet life the moment they moved where they did. Shrewsbury will remain a cultural wasteland as long as they dictate to the council what events it is allowed to organise for us.

one too many ‘disadvantages’ there I think…..Freudian slip?

I don’t know about being used to it’s full potential but the Back to the 80′s concert last year was fantastic!

No more 80′s nights please. Unless the Smiths reform, but I don’t think that’ll happen anytime soon. How about something for those under 40?

I’m 35 and I was quite happy with the 80s line-up.

support your local football club. the new meadow/prostar stadium is the ideal place for status quo, robbie williams etc, floreat salopia/what your proposing!!

Andrew there have been two 80′s nights in the quarry, so how about something else now. Shrewsbury has loads of good and talented musicians, give them a chance.

I’m sure there are some excellent musicians in the county but – and with all due respect – the question is, how many of them would sell 10,000 tickets?
