Quo could play Quarry gig

statusquoHit rock band Status Quo could yet play in Shrewsbury’s historic Quarry – if talks aimed at allowing them to play loud enough prove a success.

A forum which is raising cash for armed forces veterans wants the band to headline a two-day event in the town next year.

And they say initial talks with the band’s agent have proved positive, but how loud they can play could be a problem.

They have now called in Shrewsbury MP Daniel Kawczynski, who is trying to secure a meeting between the forum and Shrewsbury Town Council to find a solution to allow the band to play in the charity concert in the town.

It comes just weeks after it was claimed at a town council meeting that Status Quo would not even consider playing the Quarry because they could not play loud enough because of restrictions on the noise level at the site.

Jim Geraghty, from the Combat Stress veterans forum which is trying to organise the event for June 25 or 26 to raise cash for Combat Stress and Help for Heroes, said: “I’ve spoken to Status Quo’s agent and he said they would play Shrewsbury for Combat Stress and Help for Heroes but what is the problem?

“I think they would play and we would like them to headline this event but it depends on resolving the noise level issue. The idea would be to hold a concert on the Friday night which would be something like the 80s event held in the town previously and bring Status Quo in on the Saturday night, when we would also like to have military bands and other entertainment as well.

“We would like to raise the profile of Shrewsbury and Shropshire and I’d be delighted to get Status Quo here and to organise such an event to raise cash for charity.”

Mr Kawczynski said: “I’ve said they need to negotiate with the council. I think it’s vital we have in Shrewsbury such a concert in aid of Combat Stress and Help for Heroes.”
