It’s a bit of a squeeze
Saturday 12th September 2009, 10:05AM BST.
A huge crane which was caught on camera as it attempted to squeeze its way along a narrow street in Shropshire is being featured on YouTube.
Now campaigners are renewing calls for weight restrictions on heavy goods vehicles driving through Wem town centre after branding the video footage as “frightening”.
It comes after video clips of the crane almost getting stuck were posted on YouTube.
In all, three 21-second clips of the crane inching its way along the narrow s-bend at the top of High Street have been posted.
All the clips were posted in the last four months by a user called Wem1904. The footage has so far attracted 214 views. In a message posted with the video Wem1904 wrote: “Who is to blame? Useless local councillors, Shropshire Council, West Mercia Police or the sat nav?”.
Today Pauline Dee, a Shropshire Council member for Wem, renewed calls for traffic restrictions amid fears that buildings in the town risk being damaged if HGVs and industrial vehicles continue to trundle their way along the narrow streets.
After watching the video, Councillor Dee added: “It’s quite frightening, just imagine if you lived in one of those flats and had popped your head out of the window. You’d be in for a real shock.”
