Lembit Opik with The Cheeky GirlsMontgomeryshire MP Lembit Opik is to be quizzed by Liberal Democrat officials following nationwide publicity surrounding the new love in his life.

Mr Opik is due to appear before a meeting of the Lib Dems' Montgomeryshire constituency party before Christmas, it emerged today.

The MP's split with celebrity TV weather girl Sian Lloyd was made public last weekend as well as his new relationship with Garbiela Irmia, one half of the Romanian twins pop duo the Cheeky Girls.

But the county's Lib Dem officials refused to comment ahead of the meeting with Mr Opik, apart from confirming that a private meeting was to take place imminently and that all constituency party members were invited to attend.

Branch chairman, Powys county councillor Mervyn Kinsey, said: "All constituency party members are invited to the meeting but it will be held in camera."

Increasingly people in Montgomeryshire have been voicing concern in recent months that their MP was making headlines in national newspapers for reasons other than his political work.

He has appeared on a number of "light" television programmes, including the topical quiz show Have I Got News For You, a celebrity version of BBC's The Weakest Link and more recently in the Channel 5 All-Star Talent Show where he played his harmonica.

During the Lib Dems' leadership campaign, there was widespread coverage of the so-called "Curse of Lembit" when problems arose concerning more than one of the contenders. Political commentators were saying this week that curse had struck too close to home.
