Dumped mail found in bin

Sacks of mail containing hundreds of parcels addressed to Shropshire banks and businesses have been found dumped in a bin. Playgroup staff at Bicton Heath Community Hall, Shrewsbury, discovered the mail bags stuffed into an outside bin when they arrived to open up this morning.

Councillor Peter Adams, who represents the Gains Park area and reported the find to the police, said most of the mail appeared to be addressed to the central Shrewsbury area.

"I had a quick look in, and thought it might be someone had dumped a lot of brochures but, having a quick glance through, we found parcels addressed to opticians and banks, and parcels with clothes addressed to various people," he said.

"The volume means they must have been dropped off by van as you couldn't physically carry them all.

"There is all sorts of property in them. One has been partly ripped and looks like it could be student project work.

"But we haven't opened anything."

Lorraine Evans, the playgroup leader, said rubbish from the community centre had been strewn across the site. Staff were forced to begin clearing the mess as children were arriving.

She said: "They have just been dumped in the bin. Our rubbish was scattered all over the place when we arrived this morning.

"We went to put the black bags of rubbish in the bin, and it was just full of yellow bags with various boxes and parcels in.

"It left us in a real mess, as we had to open up for the children and had rubbish everywhere."

Police spokesman Richard Ewels said that officers would be working with the company that owns the bags to find out what had happened.

"We have contacted the company who we believe are responsible for the mail, spoken to their customer services department and are liaising with them," he said.

"They are sending someone to collect the mail, and in the meantime, they will be investigating what has happened, assisted if necessary by the police."
