Former Top Gear presenter James May has been spotted checking out a rally driving school in Mid Wales run by a six-time American Rally Champion.

May spent a day at David Higgins' Rally School in Carno, Caersws, where he spent time behind the wheel of a 1983 Audi Quattro, followed by a BBC film crew.

Mr Higgins said he had enjoyed the day, but denied that he had been giving May, whose nickname is "Captain Slow", lessons in rallying.

He said: "He wasn't here for rally lessons he just came up to do some filming for a new programme, which I can't mention until it is aired on TV.

"But he was a nice man, very complimentary of the school and I went out with him in the car which was good."

Mr Higgins said it wasn't the first time he's welcomed celebrities and film crews to his rally school, but May was one of the nicest celebrities to have dropped in.

He said: "It is nice when we get people like this up here to the rally school. It is nice to have famous faces here, but it is hard to mention it some times because we are made to sign contracts which means we can't really talk about what goes on until something is shown.

"But James was great, and a really good person to deal with."

Aside from Top Gear, May, 52, has also presented the Cars of the People documentary and Toy Stories, where he used toys such as Lego, Airfix, Meccano and plasticine to build a full-size house, Spitfire, motorbike and garden.

May is set to rejoin Top Gear co-hosts Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond in a new show on Amazon Prime later in the year. Filming started this month for the new series.
