Vow to fight Chirk Bank housing plan
Monday 22nd November 2010, 4:28PM GMT.
Council chiefs will have “a fight on their hands” if they press ahead with plans to build affordable housing in a tranquil Shropshire village, campaigners have warned today.
Shropshire Council planners are currently scouring the county to find sites for 27,500 new homes.
The quiet canal-side community of Chirk Bank near Oswestry has been identified as one such location.
A meeting will be held by Shropshire Council on Thursday in Chirk Bank to tell villagers more about plans for what has been described as a “small-scale affordable housing development”.
Campaigners said today the vast majority of villagers strongly opposed any new housing and vowed to fight the council at every step.
Angela Bright, chairman of the Chirk Bank Community Group, said: “There is simply no amenities in Chirk Bank so building more houses does not make sense.
“Shropshire Council insists there is a need for social housing in the village but we just don’t agree.
“I have a petition with 100 signatures which I will hand in at Thursday’s meeting.”
Shropshire Council chiefs said the meeting will give local people the chance to discuss the proposals with the council and Shropshire Rural Housing Association.
