Concerns raised over Snedshill social housing plans

Plans for more than 30 homes on a Telford estate could be approved despite dozens of objections from residents, it was revealed.

Bosses at Telford & Wrekin Council have submitted plans to build 31 homes at land off St Georges bypass in Snedshill.

The homes, which have been earmarked for social housing, include a mixture of apartments and houses which range from single to three stories high.

But a petition with 33 signatures and seven individual letters of objection have been received at council offices.

Residents who signed the petition have said the new build would create an eyesore, increase anti-social behaviour, lead to a loss of views and raise issues of safety and noise from increased traffic.

Written objections from neighbours include concerns over the future occupiers of the affordable units, which they claim could lead to a de-valuation of their properties.

They also complained the amount of development on the site was unacceptable.

But Telford & Wrekin Council’s case officer Emma Green, who has recommended officers grant outline permission, said in her report: “The scale and layout of the development is in keeping with the character and appearance of the surrounding area. . . the site can accommodate an acceptable mix of dwellings, with adequate parking provisions.”

Also opposed to the plans are St Georges and Priorslee Parish Council which said the three storey apartments would have a “detrimental” impact on bungalows opposite and added it would be a loss of a green space.

A Telford & Wrekin Council officer for parks and open spaces in the area also raised concerns and said there was a need for an open space because of the additional housing.

A decision on the build will now go before the borough council’s plans board on Wednesday.
