A £40,000 crime-busting car could be hitting the streets of Shropshire in a bid to cut motoring offences in the county.

Shropshire Council has just completed a week-long trial of an Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) camera, which is transported around on top of a car and records the licence plates of vehicles committing traffic and parking offences.

A GPS system inside the car recognises where traffic or parking restrictions are in place, with the camera recording images of vehicles flouting the laws.

Dave Roberts, environmental enforcement manager at Shropshire Council, said that local authorities which had used the technology found that it soon paid for itself through the parking fines.

“It costs just about £40,000, but there is another way of looking at this after speaking to councils throughout the country. We might look at other authorities such as Telford & Wrekin to share the vehicle. It could pay for itself in six months,” he said.

Shaun Sutton, a parking enforcement supervisor at the council, said he would also welcome the technology.

He said: “In Shropshire, we have received numerous complaints from schools across the county that some parents show no regard for restrictions.”

The council will now analyse the results of its week-long test before deciding whether to invest in the technology.
