Vintage motorbikes go on show for a worthy cause
Tuesday 15th March 2011, 10:02AM GMT.
Wistanstow School will benefit once again from the annual Shropshire Vintage and Classic Motorcycle Show later this month.
Ron Maund has organised the event for the past 20 years and has raised many thousands of pounds for the school.
A keen motorcycle fan he is also well known in the area as a former postman for many years.
The guest of honour at this, the 20th show at Wistanstow Hall, on March 27, will be 11 times T.T. winner Phillip McCallen.
The Ulsterman had an impressive road-racing career, which sadly ended with a heavy fall at Thruxton a month before the 1998 T.T. He subsequently retired from racing to become one of Northern Ireland’s main motorcycle dealers.
Since the first show in 1990, the event has raised over £50,000 for Wistanstow Primary School.
McCallen now joins Phil Read, Frank Perris, Tommy Robb, Stuart Graham, Percy Tait, Tony Rutter, Chris Vincent and Charlie Williams as past guests at this firmly established event in the old-bike movement.
Spokesman Finn Galtress said organisers expected a big turn out.
“The Wistanstow-based Wood Brewery will again sponsor the show,” she said.
“In the Hall visitors will enjoy viewing a full line up of bikes ranging from 1920′s to early 1960′s, which will include several stunning racing bikes. And forming a show in themselves will be the visiting bikes and popular autojumble in the surrounding grounds.”
Full catering facilities are available at the hall, with the school PTA preparing hot and cold food throughout the day.
Admission is £3 per person and the event runs from 10.30am until 4.30pm. Car parking will be clearly signposted from the A49.
“We look forward to another good day for all, with all profits raised going to Wistanstow School,” Ms Galtress said.
