Traffic cops hit the road in a Lotus supercar
Monday 17th January 2011, 4:12PM GMT.
Traffic police in Shropshire have recruited a new 162mph weapon in their battle against speeding drivers on the M54 and A5.
Central Motorway Police Group has borrowed a supercharged Lotus Evora from the sports car company until the end of January.
Officers want to use the marked car – which can accelerate from 0 to 60mph in under five seconds thanks to its 3.5 litre V6 engine – as a high-profile reminder of their presence.
Police constable Steven Rounds, from CMPG, said: “The Lotus is a visually stunning machine which offers us the opportunity to engage with the public and reinforce and promote the life-saving messages of road safety.”
The Evora will also be used on the M6 from junctions four to 16, M50 in Herefordshire and the M42 from its start to junction seven.
It will hit the streets from Sunday, once it has finished a three-day stint at the annual Autosports International Show at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham.
