Sofas for Unusual Spaces

Such is the charm and appeal of a sofa that it is rarely preferable to substitute one for stand alone chairs and however unusual your living space may be you will be very unlucky if you are unable to find a sofa that will suit it.
The most usual challenge is finding a sofa that is suitable for a small space. When designing the interior of a small room the overall objective tends to be to create an illusion or sense of spaciousness. It is very important to make the best use of all the space that is available and none of it should be permitted to be wasted.
This constraint might mean that you need to find a relatively small sofa though there is no need to sacrifice style. You might wish to consider a compact 2 seater sofa rather than a three-seater. If space is so limited that even a two-seater sofa is too large, then you might opt for a cuddler chair or sofa. These provide versatile and comfortable seating for a single person or for a couple.
Sometimes the problem is asymmetric and irregularly shaped rooms; when furnished correctly these can provide more character than symmetrical spaces. Ideally your sofa should add to the character of the room rather than detracting from it. If you use your sofa to regularise an irregular shaped space, then you may well be missing out on a unique interior design opportunity.
A modular sofa could be the ideal solution for such spaces. These consist of individual units that are joined together. There are single armed end units, units with no arm which are used as inner units, corner units and chaise long units. There are extremely versatile and many shapes can be created.
Very large spaces pose a different kind of problem and can be quite difficult to furnish satisfactorily. The tendency is to attempt to fill them with as many things as you can lay your hands on such as sofas, chairs, tables and sideboards but this rarely produces an atmospheric living space. Large spaces can appear just as cluttered as small ones if you have to navigate many obstacles as you walk through them.
It is not necessary to fill a large space in order to make it warm and cosy. It is better to maintain the feeling of space and to concentrate on creating a single focal point that will unify and define it. A large comfortable sofa corner sofa sitting in the centre of a large surrounding space can provide the ideal focal point, and it might be all the seating that the room requires. The placement of any additional furniture should compliment the sofa and accentuate it.
What ever type of space you are furnishing, colour is very important. The easiest solution is to opt for neutral colours introducing bright colours only as highlights, but sometimes small asymmetric spaces can benefit from taking a very bold approach to colour. A bright red sofa or a brightly patterned one can look great in a confined space.
