Teen beauty spot drinkers are ramblers, not rebels

Bridge Builder, Telford

Rating: *** James Shaw discovers little improvement after this Telford pub’s refit.
Take one slightly run-down pub, add tens of thousands of pounds, shake a little, and you will usually get a great place to eat.
That was the impression given when Claire and I took Louis and Luca to the Priorslee a few weeks ago.
And other pubs have gone through the same transformation in previous years – take the Cuckoo Oak in Madeley, for example.
So why not the Bridge Builder, on the Wellington Retail Park?
On first impressions, the rebuild has totally changed the look of the pub, and for the better, too.
Gone are the tatty circular tables and in their place, stylish furniture and cosy alcoves. But that surface is clearly yet to be scratched.
The pub has been relaunched under the Fayre & Square brand, with new menus and some quirky additions. Like the square burger, for example.
In the interests of fairness, however, I decided to try the lasagne. On a previous visit, I was given a lasagne which had been microwaved to within an inch of its life. So I had high hopes of avoiding a repeat.
Claire, meanwhile, asked for the gammon steak, while Luca plunged straight into a bowl of macaroni cheese.
For once, we were without Louis – he was at nursery for the day.
My lasagne arrived with chips instead of salad. Or should I say a small pile of chips, rather than anything near a full portion.
I was hoping that my memories of the rock-solid, burned lasagne I had previously ‘enjoyed’ would be banished forever by a fresh and flavoursome main course. Not really.
The first few layers were nice enough – although not especially tasty – with enough mince and sauce tucked between the cheesy pasta sheets to keep me happy.
It was the sides that caused me the most concern. All four sides of the lasagne clung grimly to the sides of the dish, completing a burnt inner ring.
My enjoyment of the main course wasn’t completely spoiled, but it was a disappointment.
Claire’s 10 oz gammon steak, however, was a huge let-down. It didn’t seem terribly large when our waiter plonked the plate onto the table, and a closer look failed to improve matters. A third of the steak was, in fact, a large streak of fat.
It was at least an inch wide and ran down the entire length of Claire’s steak. And the meat itself wasn’t exactly tasty. It was thick enough, but nothing to make it stand out.
Once we had finished our main courses, it was time to wait for desserts. And wait. And wait.
Almost 30 minutes had passed before our plates were cleared from the table and although desserts arrived moments later, we felt forgotten.
The staff, who glanced at our table several times before passing us by, did not seem at all bothered.
To finish my meal, I had the chocolate fudge cake, while Claire chose the New York style cheesecake.
Both were nice enough, but at a cost of £3.99 and £4.29 respectively, they didn’t really seem great value.
So why the three stars, you may ask?
I have wavered between three and two stars for some days, but bearing in mind the pub has only just reopened, it has the benefit of the doubt.
Goodness me, though, it was close.

went there with my partner and we were left less than impressed with the food portions … handful of chips and the meat was fatty too…
steering clear of bridge builder and priorslee in future

James, you should of gone for 2 stars you really should, please the place and your description dont indicate 3, please revisit your star meaning, is 3 star good food, a good experience, the restaurant can demonstrate cooking skills? hey? no so 2 stars infact your reviews are far too generous as a paper this if microwaved and potions on the small side should be a 1 star review.

@Steve= How do people reading this know you are genuine customer? you could be a competitor?
I have eaten at the bridge builder and yes i did complain when the scampi and chips looked better in the packet! But since the rebuild i have nothing but praise for the food side of the pub and one member of staff that stands out for excellent customer service and politeness was a young lad by the name of Stephen or Stefan. I travel from Nottinghamshire on a regular basis and will make the Bridge builder the pub of choice when i am back in the area.

Dosen’t matter what you do to the shell of a business If the core isn’t solid and is well rotten. I can assure you it is and I certainly wouldn’t venture to this pub i have a solid stomach however not that solid, I have patience however life is just simply to short to wait over an hour for something that cooks in the microwave for 3 minutes and for that reason dragons I won’t be investing my hard earned great British pounds here.

What good is it to advertise that u can get Costa’s coffee inside, when u can’t even get most of the Costa’s menu in there at all?!? Also it’s made with a coffee machine just like any other (ordinary) coffee + not with freshly ground coffee like u would expect with the name Costas. No points r given onto the Costas pointscard there either.
One of the male staff is very unfriendly + can’t even get the order right + had totally no clue as to what a “skinny” latte is!!!
The other male staff was friendly + the lady I was served by on another occasion was not very enthusiastic.
All in all a place NOT WORTHY of stopping.

Along with Cappucino,Lattes, skinny or otherwise are nothing more than overpriced cups of tasteless slop sold to gullible wannabetrendies by coffee shops & restaurants who know how easy it is to stimulate demand for anything from Macaroni to Bruno Tonioli as long as it’s Italian.
If you want to know what coffee actually tastes like, order a Ristretto,an Ellenika.an
Espresso…. or a Turkish.

Three stars I would’nt like to eat at a place you give one star.
All these cheap giz a deal pubs are rubbish. I have yet to enjoy one.
Take weatherspoons when I complained was told “it all comes out of a packet pre packed” and that was mixed grill

You’re meant to be a restaurant critic. Do not give places the benefit of the doubt, are you saying we should risk our money on this place or not? It sounds dreadful so give it a dreadful score and stop messing about.
It’s a faceless chain pub… of course the food won’t be up to much. They’re all alike. That 10oz gammon steak? That would be the precooked weight, before all of the extra injected water from the factory farmed pork leaked out. Lasagne? From the factory to the delivery vehicle to the freezer. Remove from freezer, put in microwave, select program “E”. Serve. Profit before provenance, I’m afraid.

i am not a competitor …
i am in fact someone who likes to eat out and save the hassle for me and my partner with preparation and washing up etc.
we try all different pubs in and around Telford and we have a few which we return to but will not go back to Bridge Builder or Priorslee as since ‘revamp’ in my opinion the food has gone down hill
Report abuse
not a competitor just someone who likes a meal out from time to time.
tried lots of ‘food pubs’ and will not be returning to Bridge builder or priorslee as since ‘revamp’ they appear to have gone downhill
portion sizes smaller long waits even when quiet
better pubs around to get higher marks

Make your mind up steve. First of all you say you will give the benefit of the doubt, then you say you will never go again.
Won’t be taking any notice of your reviews in future.

Colin,
You seem to be confusing Steve, a contributor to the thread, with James, who wrote the article.
Steve didn’t write the review, and his comments are consistent with one another.
Peter, if Steve is a contributor and James the writer, then who is jonboy? and are kevin and Kevin the same person? And why does the original Jake call himself that? I have never seen Jake the Fake post here. marco.
@marco: I used to post as Jake, but then someone with some rather ill informed views and a dubious grasp of English grammar started posting under the same name.

Look a bit harder Marco. We’re out here.
Good question however.
I too had wondered the same.

I walked in there last weekend. Staff were totally demotivated, food was just urgh. I will stick with the carvery in shawbirch. At least the food there is half decent and not nuked to death!!

What a nondescript review, I have eaten here, against my better judgement and it was terrible, my husband even found a piece of glass in his rice!
This should be a one star review, it sounds like the food is microwaved rubbish, that’s too expensive and the service is terrible. If the reviewer thinks that’s worth 3 stars I would hate to see what a one star place would be like!
I think you need to review your rating system. Maybe this 3 star restaurant should be out of ten not five.

I was thinking of going to the Bridge Builder following the revamp. I’m glad I read the review and comments before I wasted my money.
I do go to chain pubs e.g. the Cuckoo Oak from time to time but my expectations are pitched appropriately. Chain pubs are never likely to compete with gastropubs managed by the owner however, they should be able to do the basics well. It sounds like the Bridge Builder can’t do that and I’ll steet well clear.
You’re right, I may have been a little unfair by tarring all chain pubs with the same brush. I’ve had more than a few decent meals in some, with expectation levels set appropriately. Surprisingly, I had a superb burger in one chain pub that suffers a pretty awful reputation when it comes to food… Wetherspoon’s. And a cracking pint of ale to boot. It actually put some gastropub burgers to shame.

Try the Apley Arms in Wellington instead. Always a good meal at a good price and always popular.

Sorry to pull you up there try a breakfast
they had no toaster for 8 weeks charged 75p for a slice of bread
says coffee with cream you get semi skimmed milk (they say cream too exspecive)

Myself and a few friends popped into the Bridge Builder for mid week lunch a few weeks ago. 20 minutes after ordering our food we was advised the kitchen had run out of salad but we could have coleslaw instead. This was at 12.30. One of our party suggested to the manager a staff member nip a few yards up the road to Tesco and get some salad from there. She was blanked.

Gosh what a fuss. Why do these people moan when they pay someone else to prepare cheap convience food that they can’t be bothered to make themselves? And then they don’t even have to wash up!
Do what I do when you are in a rush and want a quick, hassle free meal – make beans on toast!
And for those who are travelling, do what I do – make some sandwiches the night before.
Its not difficuly – honestly *tut*

Can anybody truthfully recommend a decent (non – chain) place to eat in Telford? We usually have to go as far as the fox and duck near Newport for a family do.
I’m thinking… but I’m struggling.
The Pheasant at Admaston’s okay. The Old Orleton just outside Wellington is very nice. The White House in Muxton’s not bad either.
Like you, we usually end up going further afield: The Fox at Chetwynd Aston, The Aston at Church Aston and The Golden Ball in Ironbridge.
The fox and duck’s a chain too, DOH!!
Do you mean The Fox at Chetwynd Aston?
Brunning and Price. B&P was an independent regional company with very high standards who sold the business to The Restaurant Group plc for a tidy sum. TRG mostly owns “plastic wipe-clean menu” brands such as Frankie & Benny’s, Chiquito and Garfunkel’s, so I was expecting the worst when it happened (especially since I’d put an offer in on a house about 200 metres away!!). Thankfully they didn’t mess with the formula and it’s still a cracking place to eat and drink.
A great example of a chain that works. The bad ones are the mega-corps… Punch, Spirit, Marstons, etc. Spirit own Fayre & Square, the subject of the review.
I did indeed mean that one, it’s a twelve mile drive to get there but we love it for the food / drink / staff. The sister pub in Shrewbury (the armoury)is great too. The old B&P website used to have suggestions for sites for their pubs but I’m not sure if they have sold up that they still do. I agree with the list above of eateries, but four or five places for all the population of Telford is a bit sad.
Critics are supposed to be objective, report exactly what they experience.
Mr Shaw should realise that his reviews will either draw people towards or away from an establishment depending on the review he has writen.
Therefore you have a responsibility to report honestly without emotion or hope.
Should I take my nearest & dearest to the BB and find I have to stump up £100 for sub-standard food and service can I pass the bill forward?
Didn’t think so!

Well said!

Although basic game theory would suggest that to increase your chances of getting a table giving somewhere bad a good review and vice-versa is a wise move.
