Travellers told to check insurance

Shropshire holidaymakers caught up in the airport chaos could also find themselves seriously out of pocket by the time they finally get home, an insurance broker warned today.
Dave Williams, of Henshalls Insurance Brokers, which has offices in Newport and Shrewsbury, warned that travellers should be checking the small print on their insurance policies.
“There are no hard and fast rules, as each individual insurer seems to be taking their own view on whether to cover the incident,” he said.
“But many companies are classifying it as an ‘act of God’, and refusing to pay out, so each holidaymaker should pay careful attention to their own policy,” he added.
The ash cloud has left hundreds of Shropshire people facing delays and uncertainty about when they will be able to travel – either stranded in an overseas country or forced to delay their outgoing holiday plans.
Mr Williams said: “Some insurers say the incident isn’t covered under the cancellation section of their policies, but they are covering it under the delay section.
“Others are refusing to cover it at all, and say the travellers will have to put in a claim to the airline they were due to fly with.
“It’s clear that many people are caught up in this major incident, and it’s vital that anyone who is facing uncertainty over their travel plans should assess their own individual circumstances as soon as possible,” her said.
