Cousins locked up after assaulting bus passengers
Sunday 18th April 2010, 1:59PM BST.
Two cousins from Telford who assaulted three passengers and a bus driver have both been sentenced to nine months each behind bars.
Shrewsbury Crown Court heard yesterday that Nyle Keay, 20, of Acacia Drive, Leegomery, and Shaun Keay, 26, of Second Avenue, Ketley Bank, had previously admitted causing an affray on September 5 last year.
The court heard that after boarding a bus in Wellington, Nyle Keay had taken hold of driver Edward Atkinson and shouted abuse.
Mr Philip Lowe, prosecuting, said Shaun Keay apologised for his cousin, saying he was drunk, but when passenger Ian Bythell asked them to leave, Nyle Keay punched him and Shaun Keay struck his partner Lynn Wood. Justina Benson was also hit.
Sentencing, Judge Mark Eades said bus drivers were entitled to expect to be treated with respect.
The judge ordered that Nyle Keay should serve his sentence in a young offenders’ institution. He also made a High Sheriff’s Award of £250 to Mr Bythell for his actions in intervening.
Mrs Samantha Crabb, for Nyle Keay, said: “He knows he’s behaved very badly.”
Mr Henry Gow, for Shaun Keay, said: “He has tried in the past to address his offending behaviour.”
