Nick who?

Saturday 17th April 2010, 10:52AM BST.

Gordon Brown, Leader of the Conservative Party David Cameron and leader of the Liberal Democratic Party Nick Clegg.

No, don't tell me...it's...it's...er...Prime Minister Gordon Brown, Leader of the Conservative Party David Cameron and leader of the Liberal Democratic Party Nick Clegg.

It is widely recognised that Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg stole the show in the UK’s first-ever televised political debate.

Even Tory leader David Cameron was forced to concede he had a “good debate” on Thursday. And it seems it’s exactly what he needed, judging by the reaction of the Shropshire public.

Because just days earlier almost three quarters of people surveyed by the Shropshire Star admitted they did not have a clue who he was.

Only two people at Telford Shopping Centre managed to identify him in a survey of politicians and celebrities.

He did, however, fare slightly better than local MPs David Wright and Mark Pritchard. Despite serving constituents in The Wrekin for t five years, not one person surveyed identified Mr Pritchard.

Only one recognised Labour’s Telford candidate Mr Wright – and only because they had spotted him canvassing in Dawley the day before.

By contrast every shopper questioned managed to identify all five celebrities in our quiz – TV presenter Jeremy Clarkson, music mogul Simon Cowell, glamour model Katie Price, singer Cheryl Cole and footballer Wayne Rooney.

A Facebook campaign calling for Top Gear presenter Clarkson to be Prime Minister has 500,000 fans.

The only person who recognised Mr Wright was Dawley resident Lynda Tomkinson, 39, who saw him canvassing in the town.

Mrs Tomkinson said she was going to vote Lib Dem. She could not point out who the leader of the party was, but added: “I just look for the one that says Lib Dem on the voting paper.”

Gloria Crabbe, 72, identified Gordon Brown, David Cameron and Mr Clegg, knew all the celebrities and was able to guess the parties of Mr Wright and Mr Pritchard. But she was not impressed with Mr Cameron.

Luke Adair, 24 who works in Virgin Media in the shopping centre said he was voting for Labour.

He said: “Apart from the inmigration issues, they’ve done nothing wrong.”

First time voters Emily Barrett, 18, and Sally Ludlow-Rhodes, 20, said they were still unsure who to vote for but were unaware who the major politicians in the pictures were.

Many of the Telford residents asked said they believed that all the policies were the same and it did not make a great difference who they voted for.

Just shows what a sorry state the country is in when you have the choice of those three candidates to run it.
    Glad I’ve left.

Hardly surprising really – most people in Telford still think the Earth is flat.

What a bunch. A flabby jowled emotionly stunted Peter Pan, a talentless recovering character by-pass patient, Silicone Woman, a bit of Geordie eye-candy with a charming line in loo attendant greeting and but for a bizarre genetic kink a natural joyrider. God help our nation.
