TNS poised to ‘home’ in for a title kill
Friday 16th April 2010, 11:29AM BST.
With the title tantalisingly in their sight, The New Saints will be banking on their impregnable home form taking them a step closer to their goal in tomorrow’s clash with Haverfordwest at Park Hall.
The league leaders have gone 25 games without a defeat at their Oswestry base, and victory would surely put them on the brink of a fifth Welsh Premier crown.
In fact, if results go their way they could find themselves crowned champions tomorrow evening.
They have successfully navigated three successive away games, picking up nine points, to keep their only challengers, Llanelli, at arm’s length.
And they emerged firm favourites last night as Llanelli were held 1-1 by Haverfordwest, which means they still trail TNS by eight points with two games in hand.
Saints assistant boss Mike Davies admits his side are now perfectly placed following three away wins, but is refusing to take anything for granted in the last two league games.
“Obviously we’d prefer to be in our position than Llanelli’s, having so many games for them to play in such a short space of time will take some doing.
“It’s a big ask for them, but we’re certainly not thinking the title is won by any means, so we have to make sure we win our remaining two games.
“After a run of three away games, it’s nice to be back home again where we’ve got such a good record.”
Having scored 45 goals and conceded just six on home surrounds this term, the Saints are in good shape with an abundance of options after recalling midfielder Conall Murtagh and striker Craig Whitfield from their respective loan spells at Aberystwyth and Cefn Druids.
“The squad is more competitive than it has ever been this season,” added Davies. “Everyone wants to be involved so we’ve got a few selection decisions to make for Saturday.”
