Chaos fear over Oswestry water works

Friday 16th April 2010, 11:29AM BST.

A huge £3 million scheme to replace Oswestry’s ageing water mains and sewers will bring traffic chaos to the town and impact upon its programme of summer entertainment, councillors fear.

The scheme was unveiled by Severn Trent at an exhibition at the Guildhall last month.

But town councillors say they have received very little information about the works and fear they will cause disruption to the town, damaging efforts to help it recover following the recession.

They say it is vital people are aware Oswestry will remain open for business throughout the disruption.

Councillor Martin Bennett said he understood part of the work would be to bury two huge floodwater holding tanks in Victoria Road which could shut the road.

He said: “We don’t know how long that will be and how it will affect traffic flows in the area.

“We need to contact the chamber of commerce to ask what representations have been made to them in order to publicise Oswestry is still open for business.”

A Severn Trent spokeswoman said the firm had been working with the highways department on traffic management to find a way of doing the work with minimal disruption to local residents.
