Queen to visit town

Wednesday 14th April 2010, 9:22AM BST.

The Queen will unveil a commemorative plaque at Welshpool’s new livestock market when she pays an official visit to the town on April 28.

Her Majesty, accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh, will be shown around the new market facilities at Buttington Cross after arriving at Welshpool by train.

The market was officially opened last autumn and is the largest one-day livestock market in Wales and one of the biggest centres for sheep sales in Europe.

The royal couple will meet Welshpool Livestock Auctioneers’ partners and staff and later go into the town centre and attend that day’s farmers’ market held in the town hall.

A partner of Welshpool Livestock Auctioneers, Jonathan Evans, said today: “It’s nice of her to come here. They’re both very good supporters of agriculture and we will be pleased to be able to show off our new facilities.”

No details of the exact timings of the visit have yet been released.
